On Feb. 14, students walked out of their 3rd period classes at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes to honor the lives of the 17 people killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL and to protest recent gun violence. Students gathered in the amphitheater, some wearing orange or holding homemade signs. A balloon was released each minute as the name of each victim was read along with a short bio. Four students gave speeches about the change they believe needs to happen in response to the shootings. There was also a banner for students to sign; it was sent to MSD to show WHS’s support and solidarity. This walkout was one of many that happened across the nation on the same day.
