Matthew Habermann chosen as March Boys Athlete of the Month

The WHS varsity baseball team had a bittersweet season finishing 10-16 overall and 5-9 in Marmonte League. Their team leader and pitcher Matthew Habermann ‘18 was chosen as the March Boys Athlete of the Month.

“I was surprised and happy when I found out I was Athlete of the Month,” said Habermann.

This past season, Habermann has been a driving force behind each of the teams wins.

Last season, Habermann’s stats were below national averages. However, through hard work and practice, this season’s stats have exceeded, and, in some areas, surpassed the national average.

“[Habermann] showed great self improvement,” said baseball varsity Coach Zach Thornton. “[He] is a wonderful player to coach.”

Habermann is a very important component of the team. He is sociable and well-liked by the players as well as the the coaching staff.

Many teammates admire Habermann’s leadership abilities. Teammate Hayden Vaughn ‘19 described Habermann as both “a great team player” and “a pleasure to play with.”

Habermann is not only an exceptional player, but he also contributes to clearer communication between the coaching staff and the players.

Habermann’s passion and love for baseball is clear whenever he steps onto the field, for both practices and games.

“I am proud of [Habermann ],” said Thornton. “He deserved to be awarded Athlete of the Month.”

Habermann will be attending Santa Clara University next year to study finance.
