Levy's Clothier storefront in Nashville announcing its Green Hills store will close in late December

Nashville’s Levy’s Clothier Says It Will Close Green Hills Store in Late December After 171 Years as Fifth Generation Owners Citing Health Issues and Lease Renewal

NASHVILLE, TN — Levy’s Clothier, a long-running Nashville retailer known for men’s clothing and custom service, says it will close its Green Hills store in late December after 171 years in business. The family-owned company said fifth-generation owners David and Ellen Levy made the decision because of health issues and a lease renewal.

The closure would end a run that began in 1855, when the store opened on Market Street in downtown Nashville before the Civil War. Levy’s says it has remained in the family for generations and became a fixture for shoppers looking for tailored apparel, alterations and one-on-one service.

What Levy’s Announced

The retailer said the Green Hills location will be its last physical store, and that the final month of the year will mark the end of the shop’s current chapter. David Levy, the company president, said the decision was bittersweet and emphasized the role of the staff, customers and vendors who supported the business over time.

Levy’s also said September will be “Custom Month,” described as the last chance for customers to visit for custom tailoring with special discounts. The company said people are welcome to stop by in the coming months to share memories before the final day. Online shopping will remain available through the company’s website.

How The Store Grew

Levy’s says it survived major economic swings, including the Great Depression and the Great Recession, and adapted as shopping changed with the rise of online commerce. The business moved to Green Hills in 1978, leaving its original downtown location decades earlier.

David Levy took over the store in the summer of 1998, according to the company. In remarks provided by Levy’s, he said he was proud of the store’s history and grateful for the customers who have dressed their families there for generations. The business has been known for luxury men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, wardrobe consultants and in-house tailoring services.

What Customers Can Do

Levy’s says customers can visit the store during regular hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and private appointments are available. The company also invites people to send their stories by email to customerservice@levysclothes.com.

For updates, shoppers can check the company’s website at levysclothes.com. The store says it hopes to spend the coming months celebrating its history with Nashville before the Green Hills location closes for good in late December.
