KEENE, NH — Piggly Wiggly locations have closed in several states, according to online listings, company Facebook posts and recent news reports, adding to a patchwork of changes at the grocery chain owned by C&S Wholesale Grocers. The brand, based in Keene, says it still operates more than 500 stores across at least 17 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida and Georgia.
Closures have been reported in Alabama, South Carolina and Wisconsin, while the company’s only Oklahoma store shut down last year. At the same time, some former Piggly Wiggly sites have been rebranded instead of disappearing entirely, showing that the chain’s footprint is shifting rather than shrinking in just one way.
Closures Reported So Far
Inc. and permanent closure notices online identified several stores that ended operations between summer 2025 and August 2026. Those locations include Athens, Georgia; Bristol, Florida; Green Bay and Howard, Wisconsin; Magnolia, Arkansas; Phenix City, Alabama; Portland, Tennessee; and Sumter, South Carolina.
One of the most recent examples came in Bristol, where staff members said on Aug. 4 that the store would close on Aug. 7 because of staffing issues. Workers said the location could not keep offering service at the level customers deserved and that the business would instead operate under the Cash Saver banner in nearby Blountstown. The store said it had watched the staffing problem for more than a year.
Why Stores Are Changing
The recent changes reflect different decisions at different locations. In Muldrow, Oklahoma, Piggly Wiggly said in a Facebook post that it chose to “step back and close this chapter,” and the store’s final day of business was Aug. 2, 2025, with deeply discounted items offered to clear shelves. That post was later deleted, though a copy was reposted on a public group page that follows city news.
Elsewhere, the chain’s name is being removed even when a business stays open. Inc. and company Facebook pages reported that Jamason Sparks bought five Piggly Wiggly stores in northwestern West Virginia and Ohio and then rebranded them. The company’s website says Piggly Wiggly was founded in Memphis in 1916 and is known for private-label foods, hot bars and its Mr. Pig mascot.
What Shoppers Can Check
Piggly Wiggly did not immediately respond to a request for details about whether more locations may close. For now, shoppers who rely on a specific store are being left to sort through online notices, local posts and banner changes to see whether a familiar location is still operating under the same name.
Company-owned and franchised stores remain spread across much of the central and eastern United States, so the impact of each closure depends on the local market. Customers can check the company website and the Facebook pages tied to individual stores for notices about hours, banner changes or permanent closure announcements.
