The WHS Boys Athlete of the Month for September is varsity quarterback Jake Kaplinski ‘18. Through his first 5 games of the season, Kaplinski has thrown for 1,264 yards and 15 touchdowns with only six interceptions.

“Starting off the season we got a big win, and we’ve continued to play at a high level,” said Kaplinski.

With a quarterback rating of 114.8 through the first month of the season, Kaplinski has been playing at an elite level thus far.

A particularly noteworthy performance was a game at Newbury High School on Sept 8 against the Panthers. During a nail-biting 42-40 win, Kaplinski threw 5 touchdowns and over 250 yards to improve WHS to 3-0, their best start in five years.

“His talent is great,” said football head coach Tim Kirksey. “His leadership ability is what really impresses me about him. He makes some great decisions because he’s an intelligent kid.”

Through the month of September, the Warriors have had an undefeated record including a hyped matchup against crosstown level Thousand Oaks High School.

“Our team has had a ton of momentum” said Kaplinski. “Going for it each week lets us build on our mistakes and break down each performance.”

Although he suffered a concussion early in October, Kaplinski hopes to return soon and help the Warriors build off their 5-2 start.
