Cade Sommers ’24

Q: What do you think makes you a good team?

A: “I think what makes us a good team is that we are always pushing each other to become better in practice. Not only that, [but] since we have been on the same team for two years now, we all know each other’s strengths and [weaknesses] and what works well for each of us.”

Q: How have you been preparing for each meet?

A: “For our sessions, we start off by warming up and then we either do some handoffs or sprints. We prepare for the meets by resting and recovering to make sure our legs are ready to go.”

Q: How have you improved over your four years at Westlake?

A: “I have improved as a leader over my four years at Westlake. I have been on track for many seasons so I am now able to be a role model for those new to the sport.”

Kai Bennett ’24

Q: How have you been preparing for each meet?

A: “We’ve been practicing our handoffs multiple times every week [and] talking about racing strategies.”

Q: What do you think makes you a good team?

A: “We know each other really well. We know how each other runs, [so] we’re confident in one another and that’s helped us progress.”

Q: What are you most looking forward to in the season?

A: “I’m looking forward to making a lot of improvements, [setting] a lot of [personal records], working with my teammates and just going up and up from here.”

Ylian Ostojic ’24

Q: How have you handled setbacks with your team?

A: “We’ve [overcome setbacks] by just supporting each other, helping each other out and mentally pushing each other to our best.”

Q: How have you improved over your four years at Westlake?

A: “I’ve improved by focusing on myself and being determined [as well as] being consistent all the time.”

Q: What is your favorite event to run and why?

A: “My favorite event is probably the 200 because my top end comes in later and the 200 is really where I can show off my top end.”

MJ Byrd ’26

Q: What do you think makes you a good team?

A: “I think [it’s] how close we are because of last year…and obviously because we’re all fast and all on varsity.”

Q: What are you most looking forward to in the season?

A: “Just [seeing] how far we get, breaking [personal records] and being able to enjoy those moments together as a team.”

Q: How do you overcome setbacks?

A: “[We] keep a good mindset about it and don’t let it get to us because we know we can do better.”
