Baselworld reveals new watches
Every year, all of the world’s biggest watch manufacturers gather at Baselworld, a convention located in Basel, Switzerland, to showcase their latest innovations in design and technology.
Baselworld 2018, which lasted from March 22 to 27, marked the release of several truly groundbreaking pieces in the watchmaking industry, including several homages to old watches highly sought by watch collectors and enthusiasts.
Arguably the most highly anticipated watch of the convention was Rolex’s new GMT Master II watch, reference number 126710BLRO. What makes this watch special is its “Pepsi” bezel, which means the ceramic outer ring of the watch is blue and red.
The history of the Pepsi bezel is a large part of its popularity: it dates back to the very first GMT Master, released in 1955. Rolex stopped the production of stainless steel watches with Pepsi bezels in 2007.
The predecessor to this watch, released in 2014, was only available in white gold, which was highly controversial among potential buyers. However, this brand new stainless steel version of the watch will be affordable for a wider audience, and this will make it much easier to wear on a daily basis.
Additionally, the watch features Rolex’s Jubilee bracelet rather than the Oyster bracelet more commonly found on its sports-style watches, and a brand new movement, making it extremely sought after and a safe investment for watch collectors around the world.
Another landmark release at this year’s Baselworld was Omega’s new 1948 Seamaster. This limited edition watch, created to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Seamaster, looks almost identical to the original Seamasters, which were originally made for the British Ministry of Defence.
Beneath the dial, however, the watches contain Federal Institute of Metrology certified, anti-magnetic automatic movements that are manufactured in-house by Omega, and are at the cutting edge of modern mechanical watchmaking.
