Ashley Webb chosen as September Girls Athlete of the Month

Since fifth grade, Ashley Webb ‘19, the September Girls Athlete of the Month, has had a strong passion for volleyball. She has carried that passion throughout middle school and into high school, where she is one of the star players on WHS’s team.

Webb has been on the WHS girls varsity team for all four years of her high school career and is currently captain, playing setter and opposite hitter.

“It’s such an honor, and all of the girls on my team are so supportive,” said Webb. “It’s just nice to represent the volleyball team as one of the Athletes of the Month.”

Webb has helped lead the team to a 28–1 record so far, and is close to winning four straight league championships.

She is a super-student with one of the crazy high GPAs,” said varsity girls volleyball coach Ernest Rittenhouse. “Ashley is a great person and teammate. She … is never intimidated [and] thinks with a strategic mind.”

In her four years on the team, Webb describes winning Marmonte League each year as one of her greatest volleyball–related accomplishments. However, more recently, Webb is proud of her team’s victory against Harvard–Westlake School with a score of 3–2 on Aug. 27.

“They were just such a strong team, and we were kind of expecting it to be close, but not expecting us to win necessarily,” said Webb. “Pulling out that win was just really awesome.”

Webb’s character is a key contributor to the atmosphere on and off the court, according to her teammates.

“Ashley is a very happy person, she’s very supportive, she doesn’t get down when we may be losing,” said Elizabeth Crisp ‘19, who also plays opposite hitter on the team. “She has a positive attitude and she always does her best.”

Despite one of her main positions as setter, one of Webb’s greatest strengths are her dependable serves.

“She’s a really good server, and so at certain times in a game like when we may be losing or when it’s a tight game, her serve always is consistent,” said Crisp.

Webb has committed to play volleyball at Washington and Lee University in Virginia.

“That’s where my sister plays as well, so we’re going to be on the same team for my freshman year and her senior year,” said Webb.

Webb’s goals for the team are to make it past the second round in playoff and advance as far as possible after that in CIF.

“She is a remarkably consistent player who is nearly unflappable,” said Rittenhouse. “Which is to say, nothing really rattles her on the court.”
