Jen Trephan is WHS’s Girls September Athlete of the Month

Jen Trephan is WHS’s Girls September Athlete of the Month

WHS girls varsity volleyball opposite hitter and setter Jen Trephan ‘19 was chosen as the Girls September Athlete of the Month.

“She’s just basically an all-around strong player,” said co-captain Ashley Webb ‘19. “Whether she’s hitting or setting, she’s able to make a difference on the court.”

Standing at 6’2’’, Trephan is a force in WHS athletics, starring for three varsity sports: indoor volleyball in the fall, soccer in the winter and beach volleyball in the spring.

“Naturally, she is an emotional leader who helps to keep us serious and competitive,” said girls volleyball head coach Ernest Rittenhouse.

Part of a strong group of juniors at the core of the indoor volleyball team, Trephan excels in the sport.

“I definitely think she’s like the voice of the team,” said co-captain Paris Short ‘19. “She’s very passionate about how she plays and … she definitely makes other people play better.”
This season, Trephan has helped the Warriors to an undefeated season, 18-0 overall and 7-0 in league.

“She either leads us or is second on the team statistically in kills, kill percentage, digs, assists, blocks and aces,” said Rittenhouse. “We have never had a player so dominant across the entire stat line.”

Trephan has been a part of the varsity volleyball squad since she was a sophomore, previously starring for the JV team.

“Jen seems to improve every time she steps on the court,” said Rittenhouse. “She is better in all facets … and she was first team All-Marmonte League and first team All-County last year.”
Currently ranked 5th in CIF SS Division 2 and 15th in state, the team is targeting an undefeated season and a fifth straight Marmonte League title.

“I’m very competitive,” said Trephan. “I always want to win, so it makes me work harder.”

The team hopes to advance further into the postseason than in previous years, in which it only reached the first round of CIF.

“Between Jen’s high hitting percentage and the amount of kills she gets every game, and then also her consistent passing and defense, she’s just that consistent player on the court that can help us win,” said Webb.

Trephan was humbled by the award and excited for the future, saying that “it makes me want to work harder still.”
